“Hello. My name is Dorice, and this is my story.
I come from a very humble background. Life for me was fun until the fateful day when I felt my dreams being shattered one after the other. It was the year 2002. I was only 12 years old and in Grade Six when we received the fateful news that my mother had passed away. At that point, it didn’t hit me so hard. I somehow came over it within a very short time. But then came another big blow. It was barely a year after my mother’s death that my dad also passed away. This was in the year 2003. I was a pre-candidate then, one more year to sit for my final exams in primary school. I have three siblings; two sisters and a brother. Being the first born, I knew that this was the end of the road for us, for my education, dreams, desires… everything. I took my final exams in 2004 but knew I had no financial means of joining high school.
One Sunday after church, I received the good news that Horizon Initiative would provide so that I could join secondary school. I think I was the happiest girl on earth that day. Horizon initiative became my family sent from God. The happy faces of those younger than me, who were also sponsored through Horizon, became my source of inspiration. I knew I had a reason to live and smile again.
My Horizon sponsor saw me through high school and is currently seeing me through university. I am pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Business Management, Finance and Banking. Right now I am in my fourth and final year. What’s more, God did not forget my family either. He opened doors so that my siblings are now in school, and I have a very healthy and happy grandmother. I take this opportunity to express my gratitude for giving us a second chance to see our dreams coming to pass and putting those amazing smiles on our faces.”
Dorice was the first woman in her local community to attend college, let alone graduate from high school. She is now well on her way to achieving her dream of becoming an accountant as she wraps up her final year at business school in Eldoret. With the support of her sponsor, Dorice’s hard work will soon come to fruition, allowing her to provide not just for herself, but also for her siblings and grandmother as she has so longed to do. We have no doubt that her own strength, work ethic, spirit, and education will sustain her from this point on.
